The traditional greeting “wai” – a slight bow of the head with palms pressed together – symbolizes respect and politeness. One of the most essential traditions is visiting temples and making offerings, which is connected to spiritual balance and wishes for happiness. Thais often take part in vibrant festivals, such as the Songkran water festival and the Loy Krathong lantern festival.

Cuisine

Thai cuisine is famous worldwide for its rich aromas and balance of flavours. Traditional dishes combine sweet, salty, spicy and sour tastes in perfect harmony. The most popular dishes are Pad Thai, Tom Yum soup, Massaman and Green Curry. Lemongrass, coriander, coconut milk and chili are widely used in the cuisine. Street food culture is an integral part of everyday life – fresh, aromatic food can always be found at market stalls.

Temples

Thailand is known for hundreds of golden and white temples that symbolize peace and spirituality. Wat Arun in Bangkok, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep in Chiang Mai and Wat Rong Khun, or the White Temple, in Chiang Rai are just a few of the most famous. The temple architecture is richly decorated, and monks are often found performing daily meditations and religious rituals there.
